Martial arts instructor pleads guilty to three more counts of child sex abuse
SALISBURY, Md. - After yesterday's plea deal in Worcester County, former martial arts instructor Zachariah Bennett has agreed to another plea deal with the state, this time admitting to three counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
Each count is for an individual victim, each one an underage female student of Bennett's at Mitchell's Martial Arts in Salisbury where he worked at the time. However, unlike Tuedsay's plea deal, Wednesday's plea agreement has been sealed. Details will not be made public until Bennett's sentencing hearing in May.
Wednesday in court the state provided a statement of facts--that Bennett had all three victims perform oral sex on him. The state said that Bennett would also request and send naked photos to the victims. With one victim, however, things went further, with the state saying Bennett's alleged co-conspirator, Leah Wright, served as a lookout for Bennett as he had sex with the victim.
Detectives say this victim told them she was scared during all of the incidents. Leah Wright has not yet gone to trial.
After court let out Wednesday morning, R.S. Mitchell, owner of Mitchell's Martial Arts, told 47 ABC's Julian Sadur that he believes justice has been served. Mitchell did not comment further.
Each count of sexual abuse of a minor potentially comes with a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. Sentencing will come in mid to late May.
Reno man gets 39 life sentences on
39 charges of child sexual abuse
by Kaleb Roedel
RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — A 45-year-old Reno man was sentenced to 39 life sentences after being found guilty of 39 counts of child sexual abuse, according to prosecutors.
In one of the largest child sexual abuse trials ever tried in Washoe County, Valentin Corrales was found guilty of 39 counts of lewdness with a minor under the age of 14, sexual assault of a child, and sexual assault in December 2016.
According to the Washoe County District Attorney's Office, evidence presented during the December trail and at sentencing showed sexual abuse by Corrales against four child victims over a 25-year span.
At sentencing, the Honorable Elliott Sattler imposed 39 life sentences against Corrales, ordering that they all be served consecutively. He is not eligible for parole.
District Attorney Chris Hicks praised Judge Sattler’s decision.
"These severe and just sentences," Hicks said, "not only validate the victims’ courage to come forward and disclose the atrocities forced upon them by this horrendous defendant but also guarantee he will be behind bars, with no hope of ever being free, for the rest of his existence.”
In late February of 2015, a 19-year-old victim reported to police that she had been a victim of sexual abuse by Corrales for the last 13 years.
An investigation followed revealing additional victims whose years of abuse went back to 1994. All victims reported the sexual abuse started when they were approximately 6 or 7 years old.
Further investigations determined that Corrales had been convicted of two counts of lewdness with a minor under the age of 14 in 1990 involving two minor victims. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
Within six months of his release from prison in 1992, Corrales managed to place himself in a relationship with a single mother, who had two young daughters. They got married and had several children. It was this relationship that spawned the instant charges involving multiple victims over many years. Throughout those years, Corrales employed threats, fear and bribery to maintain their submission and silence.
During trial, Deputy District Attorneys Nicole Hicks and Peg Samples introduced compelling testimony from the victims and witnesses, evidence of the locations where the assaults occurred, provocative photographs the defendant had taken of some of the victims, and DNA evidence connecting him and a victim to objects used during the assaults.
They also introduced testimony from his previous victims, who are now adults, which illustrated his continued motivations to sexually abuse children.
During closing arguments, DDA Nicole Hicks argued that Corrales’ motivation in life was to create “unrestricted, unfettered and unlimited access to child victims.”

The woman, now 18, told police she had been coerced into having sex with Garcia because he threatened to harm her family.
Garcia is being held at the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes without bail.
Cocoa police also said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been notified because Garcia is in the U.S. on a work visa. Police said he's lived here for more than 10 years.
Lake Mills man gets 25 years for child sexual abuse
By Mary Pieper, Mason City Globe Gazette
A Lake Mills man was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison Tuesday for sexually abusing a girl in Winnebago County.
Leslie Myers, 40, pleaded guilty in January in district court in Forest City to one count of felony second-degree sexual abuse.
He was accused of committing sex acts on a girl younger than 12 multiple times in a 12-month period ending in August 2016, according to court documents.
Prosecutors agreed to dismiss five additional sex abuse charges in the case in exchange for the guilty plea.
Myers must serve 17 years and six months in prison before being eligible for parole.
When he is released from prison he will be under lifetime supervision by the Iowa Department of Corrections, with eligibility for parole. Myers also must register as a sex offender for the duration of his post-prison supervision.
He was ordered to pay $2,224 restitution to the state’s Crime Victim Compensation program, in addition to other costs and fees.
Myers is already on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry.
He was convicted in June 2016 of possession of electronic media depicting a teen girl involved in a sex act.
Myers received deferred judgment and probation in the exploitation case.

Guilty plea entered in child sodomy case
By Blake Deshazo
A Selma man pleaded guilty Monday to sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy in June 2015.
District Attorney Michael Jackson said 26-year-old Clemon Bailey was set to go on trial this week but pleaded guilty to first-degree sodomy.
“Sexually abusing kids is a horrible crime,” Jackson said. “We are going to keep shipping these sexual predators off.”
Jackson said Bailey was sentenced to 204 months in prison.
According to court records, Bailey was arrested May 22, 2015. In a previously published Times-Journal report, Lt. Curtis Muhannad, who is no longer with the Selma Police Department, said Bailey was arrested in Marion with help from the Marion Police Department.
He was originally charged with first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree sodomy and enticing a child for immoral purposes.
According to a police report, authorities were notified of the abuse when the victim and Bailey were given a ride by someone to Bailey’s residence. The report states when Bailey got out of the vehicle, the victim started crying and the driver could tell something was wrong.
The victim stayed in the vehicle and told the driver that Bailey sexually abused him. The driver recorded the conversation and took the victim to his parents’ home to inform them about what happened.
The victim’s parents took him to the hospital and reported the rape to police. The victim told police he was staying at Bailey’s house, who according to the report was the victim’s God brother, when the sexual abuse happened. He also stated that he was abused more than once.
According to a Times-Journal report, Sgt. Evelyn Ghant said Bailey knew the child through a church program.
Court records show Bailey was arrested in 2011 for first-degree rape, but Ghant said at the time of his arrest in 2015 the charges had been reduced.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas - A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Ash Morgan Arthur was arrested by child abuse investigators on March 4 at his residence in the 23400 block of Fox Run Blvd.
After family members became concerned, they requested a welfare check by police.
When deputies arrived at the residence and made contact with Arthur, they discovered a 15-year-old female runaway who was staying at the residence, authorities said.
The girl is from Woodland, California, and met Arthur on an app called KIK in July 2016, according to investigators.
The two talked for several months before Arthur convinced the girl to meet him, deputies said.
The girl stayed with Arthur for a few days at a local motel, and then the girl came to his house, investigators said.
During examination interviews, investigators said they learned that Arthur had sexual contact with the girl.

There are 105 new charges against Rodney Scott, 50. He was already facing at least 70 sex abuse charges, WECT reported.
Before Tuesday, seven men had come forward accusing the former AAU basketball coach of sexual abuse.
