A Preble County, Ohio, jury this week convicted a Somerville, Ohio, man on nine counts of sexually abusing two children.
Ricky L. Marcum, 45, was convicted of rape of a child younger than 10, rape by force or threat of force of a child younger than 10, sexual battery, two counts of gross sexual imposition involving children younger than 10, two counts of gross sexual imposition involving force or threat of force and two counts of importuning, which is asking a minor for sex.
The jury deliberated five hours after a two-day trial before Judge David Abruzzo in the Preble County Court of Common Pleas, according to a press release from Preble County Prosecutor Martin P. Votel.
The court also conducted a hearing on whether Marcum would be classified as a sexually violent predator, meaning he would be likely to engage in future sexual offenses. If classified as a sexually violent predator, Marcum would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
If not classified a sexually violent predator, Marcum faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years and could be sentenced to life with the possibility of parole.
A sentencing hearing has been set for 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Marcum was convicted of molesting two children known to him between Jan. 1, 2009, and June 7, 2012, when both were younger than 10. The jury heard testimony from both children about engaging in sexual contact and conduct with Marcum, the release said.
“These child victims were extremely brave, both in disclosing these heinous crimes and in coming forward and testifying to them in a very public forum,” Votel said in the release. “There is no crime as despicable as child sexual abuse ... .” - Amen to that!
