Pre-schooler Raped by Teacher - 3rd Time in Bangalore Schools in 4 Months

BANGALORE: A four-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a teacher at her school in North Bangalore on Tuesday.

Bangalore is the third largest city in India and is located in the central deep south.

There are conflicting reports on the girls age, either 3 or 4. There are also conflicting reports on how the mother noticed the assault, and on who filed the police report. These are really incidental details, the fact is a very little girl was raped by an adult who was somewhat responsible for her safety.

The girl, an LKG student of a private international school near Jalahalli Cross, off Tumkur Road, was subjected to medical tests and later admitted to a private hospital in Yeshwantpur.

Acting on a complaint filed by her mother, North division police headed by DCP TR Suresh interrogated six male teachers in the night. Two were found on the school campus, and the others were summoned from home, police said. No arrests or detentions were made. The incident came to light when the girl's mother noticed wounds on her private parts after she returned from school in the evening, and questioned her.

The child revealed she had been abused by a teacher. "Uncle did this to me," she reportedly told her mother. 'Uncle' is what the children call school staff.

"The preliminary medical report revealed injuries to her private parts. The girl is in shock. We will question her on Wednesday," a Jalahalli police officer said. Senior police officers visited the school campus in the night.

The girl is the younger child of a private company employee. The mother is a homemaker. The girl's elder brother studies in the same school.

The school has eight campuses in Bangalore, besides branches in Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.

Police have registered a case against under Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code for rape.

This is the conflicting version of the story:

In the third such incident in the past four months, a three-year-old girl student was allegedly sexually abused inside a private school here today, police said.

"A three-year-old girl studying in nursery class was allegedly sexually abused here," Joint Commissioner (Crime) Hemant Nimbalkar said on Tuesday night.

A criminal case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 and IPC section 376 (rape) on a complaint from the father of the child, he said.

According to the complaint, the girl was crying when her mother picked her from the school in Jalahalli and was not behaving normal and had symptoms of fever.

While the girl initially told her mother that someone beat her up, she later said she was sexually abused, he said.

City Police Commissioner M N Reddy visited the school and ordered ACP (Malleshwaram) Sarah Fatima to investigate the matter, he said.

CCTV footage from the school was being examined and the staff members were being questioned, Nimbalkar said.

The first school rape in Bangalore in the past 4 months:

In early July, a six-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in her upscale school campus in East Bangalore. In the Vibgyor High School incident, the six-year old girl was allegedly gang raped on July 2, twelve days after which a complaint was lodged with the police who have arrested two gymnastic instructors, besides the school Founder-Chairman and skating instructor.

It is beyond my ability to comprehend how so many adults in positions of responsibility could be so utterly cruel to pass a little girl around to take turns raping her. I'm glad I will not have to stand before God with that on my resume.

The Vibgyor school incident saw public erupt in anger on the streets leading to police issuing stringent guidelines to schools to ensure safety of children and the government amending the Goondas Act to bring sexual offences under its ambit.

However, several school managements took objections to the guidelines, saying many of them would drain their resources. The guidelines included installation of CCTV cameras on campus, GPS on school buses and verification of antecedents of school staffers.

The second school rape in Bangalore in the past 4 months:

An eight year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her 63-year-old teacher inside her school premises over a period of time, with the offence coming to fore in early August, barely a month after the "gang-rape" of a six-year-old girl at Vibgyor High School here evoked public outrage.

It's pretty obvious India has a very long way to go to overcome the culture of rape that has plagued the country for centuries.
