Victim of Rotherham Child Sex Abuse Accuses Council of Doing Nothing Still

A teenager who was abused from the age of 12 by paedophile gangs in Rotherham has accused the town's authorities of continuing to "do nothing" about the scandal.
The girl, who is now 17, was protesting outside a meeting of Rotherham council to discuss the publication last week of the Jay report, which found that 1,400 children in the town were sexually exploited for more than a decade because of inaction by police and council social workers.

Councillors attending the town hall meeting were repeatedly heckled by members of the public, who repeatedly called on them to resign en masse.

Protesting outside with her mother, the girl, whose abuser was repeatedly allowed to walk free by police despite being on the sex offenders register, said: "They sit and talk about it and make out that they'll do something about it. But nothing will be done about it.

"If something was going to be done about it, it would have been done ages ago when they first found out it was happening."

Town hall deputy leader Paul Lakin told the meeting that council was "deeply sorry" for its failings. Are you going to apologize again next year after you still haven't done anything. If you don't know what to do, resign, now. That's why you failed 1400 girls in the first place.

At a separate meeting, councillors in nearby Sheffield passed a motion calling on Shaun Wright, the South Yorkshire Police Commissioner who was the Rotherham councillor responsible for social services between 2005-10, to resign over his role in the scandal.
