800 Child Sex Abuse Cases in 5 Mths, Kerala Tops Shame List

KOZHIKODE, Kerala, India: What’s common knowledge is that parents and relatives lead the pack of violators when it comes to sexual abuse of children. But an analysis of the Kerala Home Department data shows involvement of teachers and police officers as well in the heinous crime. The data shows that 801 children were sexually assaulted till May last in the State, while 1,079 child abuse cases were registered.

In comparison, Tamil Nadu, with more than double the population of Kerala, appears safer for children since it recorded 419 cases of child abuse in 2013, according to data put out by the National Crime Records Bureau.

As many as 63 officials, including 39 teachers, 15 police officers and three Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) staffers, were booked in child abuse cases registered from May 2011 to May 2014, while 4,799 people were booked in Kerala during the period.

In the case of teachers, Malappuram district tops the list with 16 named as accused in child sex abuse cases. Kozhikode, which saw cases filed against 10 teachers, is a close second. In Idukki district, apart from four teachers, two KSRTC conductors and a sweeper have been made accused so far for such crimes. With Kerala being the most literate State in the country, the figures prove to be a shocker.

In Ernakulam, three police officers, including a head constable and CRPF men, were booked. Besides, a railway TTE, GCDA Assistant Grade of the Town Planning Department and a KSEB lineman were booked.

Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights acting chairperson K Nazeer said, “We’re yet to come across cases in which police officers are accused. The commission will look into the issue and recommend the DGP to remove these officers from service.”  Nazeer added that teachers found abusing kids are charged with Protection of Children from Sexual Abuses Act.

Data from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights for March 2013 to March 2014, shows that 400 cases of sexual assault against kids were reported in the country. Kerala registered 145 such cases — the highest — till March this year.
