Teacher on Pay-roll Months After Pleading Guilty to Voyeurism at School

A deputy head teacher starting a five-year jail term after admitting filming pupils in the toilets of his school is still receiving his salary.

Gareth Williams, 47, admitted 31 charges including voyeurism and making indecent photos.

Cardiff Council, Williams' employer, said they could take "appropriate action" now the criminal case against him was over.

The education minister said it was "simply wrong" Williams was still paid.

Williams is believed to earn around £65,000 a year. Teaching pays well in Wales.

He was arrested on 23 January after police raided his home following information from police in Canada that Williams had used a credit card to pay for material from a child sex abuse images website based there.

They discovered material on his computer which showed footage of pupils at Ysgol Glantaf using the toilets in a changing room block, and some in two private homes.

Williams initially pleaded guilty to three charges of voyeurism on 31 January. So, why did his pay not stop in February?

He admitted 28 further charges in April and was sentenced to five years on Monday.

A spokesperson for education minister Huw Lewis said: "The minister expects Cardiff council and the governing body to take the appropriate action without any further delay.

"The actions of Gareth Williams were truly horrifying, and it is simply wrong that he should have been paid following his guilty plea."
