EDMONTON JOURNAL - A high-risk sex offender who was wanted in Canada has crossed the border into the United States but police there have no authority to take him into custody.
Edmonton Police Service Det. Chris Hayduk told a news conference Thursday that said American authorities are aware of Michael Sean Stanley, but he is not facing charges in the U.S. and the Canada-wide warrant for his arrest is not enforceable.
Hayduk could not say whether Stanley is currently under police surveillance/ He also wouldn't say where police believe Stanley is, but he crossed the border at Blaine, Washington.
How Stanley was able to pass through the border despite being actively hunted by Canadian authorities is still under investigation. Hayduk had alerted US Customs that he might try to enter that country.
Stanley, 48, has a long history of sexual offences that includes abducting children. He has been on the run since Oct. 1, when he cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet in Lloydminster, AB. It was found later on the roof of a business in the community.
His disappearance sparked a series of lockdowns at schools around Saskatchewan, and his SUV was later found in Lethbridge, AB.

Stanley is a high-risk sex offender, who was described in a 2006 court proceeding as having severe anti-social personality and psychopathic tendencies. At the time, he was being sentenced for the assault and unlawful confinement of two mentally-handicapped children who he had lured into his apartment.
According to police he has a long history of victimizing children and is currently on Alberta's high-risk offenders list.
