A former Abbotsford, British Columbia, Hindu priest was convicted of sexual offences involving teenage members of his congregation according to Vancouver Desi - a south Asian web site operated by The Province News.
Karam Vir, 33, was convicted in May of two counts of touching a young person for a sexual purpose and one count of sexual assault in connection with incidents that took place in 2009 and 2010 while he was employed at Abbotsford’s Hindu temple on Walmsley Avenue.
A sentencing hearing was held Wednesday in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack .
Vir made sexual advances toward the two victims, who were 17 years old, after befriending them at the temple. One young woman said Vir kissed her and there was brief sexual intercourse and/or touching three times. The other victim testified that Vir talked about wanting to get sexually involved with her but she resisted his sexual advances.
Vir continues to deny responsibility for his crimes. Justice Neill Brown said it is not unusual for an offender to maintain his or her innocence, but one hopes that after sentencing an offender will eventually change his or her mind and commit to rehabilitation.
“There isn’t a shred of doubt that Mr. Vir is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt,” Brown said.
Vir is not likely to get a long sentence but he is also subject to an exclusion order and he will be removed from Canada as soon as he is released from custody.
Brown also said a longer sentence will not be more of a deterrent to Vir than a shorter sentence, in part because of the losses he has suffered as a result of the allegations. It might, however, keep him from molesting girls for a little longer. Is it Canada's preference to dump perverts into other countries rather than keep them in jail. Works for Canada, but does nothing to stop child abuse globally.
